Zimbabwe
Lawyers for Human Rights is a membership organisation which is open to all lawyers
and law students in Zimbabwe who support the aims and objective of the organisation. It
was formed in 1996 and currently has over 100 members.
The aim of ZLHR is to foster a culture of human rights in
Zimbabwe and to encourage the growth and strengthening of human rights at all levels of
Zimbabwean society.
The primary objectives of the ZLHR are:
- To strive to protect, promote, deepen and broaden the human rights provisions in the
Constitution of Zimbabwe.
- To strive for the implementation and protection in Zimbabwe of international human
rights norms as contained in important international conventions such as but not limited
to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and
Political Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the
United Nations Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women,
the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the African Charter on Human
and Peoples Rights.
- To strive for the adoption of a Southern African Human Rights Charter and the
establishment of a Southern African Court of Human Rights.
- To endeavour to find common ground with and to work alongside other Zimbabwean groups,
organisations, activists and persons who share a broadly similar concern for and interest
in human rights.
- To liaise and work with other human rights groups wherever situated but particularly in
Southern Africa, and especially those closely linked to the legal profession.
To achieve these objectives the ZLHR:
- monitors proposed legislation which may affect human rights and submits commentaries on
such legislation to relevant bodies
- issues public statements on important human rights aspects, when appropriate
- arranges meetings, seminars and discussion groups on human rights issues
- encourages and supports prospective litigators in cases which involve the protection,
promotion, and expansion of the human rights provisions of the Constitution of Zimbabwe
- publishes a bi-annual journal entitled the
Zimbabwe Human Rights Bulletin
The Zimbabwe Human Rights Bulletin
is produced every six months and contains:
- a narrative summary of all major human rights issues on a periodic basis and an
evaluation of these developments from a social, political and economic perspective
- a summary of human rights cases in Zimbabwe
- a survey of legislation which has a bearing on human rights
- a number of articles by human rights experts on topical issues
- relevant statistics.
