Involvement of Zanu (PF) Officials

Numerous allegations have been made of involvement of ruling party officials in organising or inciting the violence

In Chikomba it is alleged that the local Zanu (PF) chairman is involved. An MDC official gave this report:

I went to the police station and spoke to the officer in charge and he gave me two policemen who took me to Zanu (PF) leaders. Those who had taken the gang were Mr Katandita, who people call "Squares", and the local Zanu (PF) chairman.

This same source also corroborated reports of a base at Sadza Hall in Chikomba.

The Zanu (PF) supporters are holding meetings every evening at 6.00 pm. at Sadza Hall near the beer hall. They took me to the meeting where people were to decide upon my case. I was interrogated by these people.

In Sadza Hall, people are forced to renounce MDC and give their T-shirts as well as to confess how they got into MDC. Everyone involved in politics, the Zanu (PF) youths, the captured people, local teachers are all supposed to go. There were over 100 of them at the meeting when I went. While I was being beaten some were inside and others were outside.

In Goromonzi it is alleged that the Zanu (PF) provincial chairman, has allowed his farm to be used a base and that his farm workers are being used to perpetrate violence.

In Mutoko it is alleged that the Council Chairman who is also a Zanu (PF) central committee member has allowed the war veterans to use council property as a base and has given them a vehicle in which to move around.

In Murehwa South it is alleged that local Zanu (PF) MP is feeding war veterans and their supporters based near St Paul’s Musami. One victim has reported:

On 10 April, a group of people came to my house around 2:00 am. They were accusing me of being an MDC chairperson who was giving problems. I was beaten with rubber sticks all over the body. My head swelled. I must have fainted for about four hours. I was denied treatment by the war vets and Zanu (PF) youths at the clinic. I had to go back home and come later. I bled through the ear and nose. Now I suffer from a persistent headache on an off and a pain in the right arm.

My home was burnt down and my mother was beaten. The ones who did it are from Musami township. They are based at the Zanu (PF) office near St. Paul’s mission. They are not locals. They are from Murehwa south constituencies, but they just avoid their own areas. There are around 200 of them loitering at the office. They go and get people at night. They are operating in the whole constituency. The local Zanu (PF) MP, J B Matiza is the one who is feeding them and his agent Jonas, who is their leader, mans the office. The CIO are very involved in the violence.

There have been several reports of another base at the Zexcom Offices at Murehwa:

The others came from Macheke and were based at the ZexCom office in Murehwa. I know because during the interrogation they boasted that they could do anything since they came from as far as Macheke, where they had killed David Stevens. But they are not the ones, none of them was a war vet, they were just mere youths.

Another report from Mukurazhizha in Murehwa North states: "There are Zanu (PF) youths based in the Muparadzi grinding mill. They go round the area each night and collect all the youths at around 6.00 pm. They take them to the mill where they hold pungwes all night until the morning around 6.00 am."

It is also alleged that a local Zanu (PF) MP, Victor Chitongo, regularly visits the place.

In Uzumba Maramba Pfunfgwe it is alleged that Zanu (PF) candidate is inciting his supporters to attack United Party members in the area.  TOP
