Buhera murders Killing of brother of MDC Parliamentary candidate Kidnapping of MDC members MDC supporter beaten to death Various violent incidents Various reports from Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace Alleged violence by MDC members and arrests of MDC members in connection with political violence Editorial comment on whether elections can be free and fair Alleged use of militias Statement from MDC Legal Committee on political violence TOP At about 8.00 p m on 15 April Mr Tichaona Chiminya was ferrying MDC youths back from a MDC meeting at Paradise Hotel at Murambinda Growth point in a pick up truck. There were two other people in the cab of the truck, namely Mr Sanderson Makombe and Ms Talent Mabika. There were a number of other MDC members in the back of the truck. According to Mr Makombe they noticed a vehicle following them shortly after leaving Murambinda. This vehicle, a blue Zanu (PF) Nissan 2.7 D double cab, was following closely, and would stop when we stopped, and pick up speed when we moved. About 500 metres away from the growth point, the Zanu (PF) vehicle overtook our car, a Mazda B2000 truck, and stopped just in front of us, blocking the way. Two men armed with AK47 rifles and others bearing iron bars emerged from the Zanu PF car and started assaulting us. The MDC youths at the back of the MDC truck fled at the sight of the guns. Makombe managed to escape after overpowering two assailants. In the scuffle, several petrol bombs were hurled into Chiminyas car, and he and the woman could not escape because the doors of the vehicle had been locked after the battering of the vehicle. Although both later managed to escape from the burning vehicle, Chiminya had been badly burned and died a few metres away. The woman died later in Murambinda Hospital. According to Happison Chiremba, one of the MDC supporters who witnessed the petrol-bombing incident, police at Murambinda were parked less than 100 metres away from the scene, and acted only later. Chiremba had alerted the police when he saw the Zanu PF truck following behind Chiminyas car, sensing that clashes would ensue. The police allegedly followed from a distance and when confronted with the unfolding reality, the police allegedly developed cold feet. Chiremba said: "It was very sad to see someone die, just like that, with the police looking on. We could not get water because no one in the township would open their doors as it was late and people were afraid. By the time we got water, Chiminya was already dead.". Earlier during the day, another MDC supporter, David Machinga, had been severely beaten and left for dead allegedly by Zanu (PF) youths. Machinga was rushed to Murambinda Hospital unconscious but he was treated and later discharged. According to The Herald police have arrested one suspect in connection with these killings at Murambinda According to MDC sources the two people who attacked the MDC vehicle are the Commander of the Central Intelligence Office in Buhera, Mr Mwale, and his deputy, Mr Sibanda. It is alleged that Mwale knew Chiminya and when Mwale saw him in the MDC vehicle he said to him "What are you doing here Chiminya?" Chiminya was then hit with a rifle butt through the window of the cab and the cab was attacked with iron bars. After the MDC members had run away some distance, one of them heard Mwale say "Where are the petrol bombs." Soon afterwards flames were seen coming from the vehicle. It is also alleged by the MDC that the Provincial Governor Mr Manyondo was seen driving
away from the scene soon after this incident. Matthew Pfebve (50), a retired police officer, was battered to death at Nyakatondo Village in Mukumbura which is in the north east of the country His father and mother were also severely beaten and the father was left for dead. Pfebwe was a retired police officer who had joined his parents at the Nyakatondo rural homestead. He retired from the police in December. Matthews brother, Elias is the MDC Parliamentary candidate for Bindura. According to Elias his brother Elias was not active in politics. Elias said that his family members had been attacked because he was an MDC candidate for elections. Elias gave this version of what happened: About 500 Zanu PF supporters were camped at Mutsenzere Primary School. "At about 5 p m on Monday (1 May), they descended on our village. They were "carrying axes, iron bars and other weapons." Pfebve said the mob abducted five people, including his father and his brother, Matthew. "My brother was murdered, my mother was beaten and my father was left for dead. They were looking for anyone with the surname Pfebve," he said. "We found Matthew's body today while Daddy returned home bleeding from severe injuries," he said, adding that three others were released unharmed. Houses in Mukumbura had been burnt down in a series of attacks on villagers. He feared that more people would be killed. TOPAn MDC member in the Mberengwa West consitutuency, Robson Gambiza, was allegedly kidnapped by a group of war veterans over the weekend and his whereabouts were still not known last night. The MDC candidate for the constituency, Mr M.Hove, said yesterday that he had reported this matter to the police and had been assured that the police were looking for the kidnappers. He said he had to appeal to the police in Zvishavane after Gambizas family told him that the Mberengwa police had said they could not help. "The police officers who visited Gambizas home told his mother who is about 74 years old that they suspected he was being held at Texas Farm in Zvishavane and police did not have access to the farm" said Hove. Hove said the ex-combatants abducted Gambiza for distributing MDC T-shirts. "They saw one of our supporters wearing an MDC T-shirt and they harassed him. They demanded to know who had given him the T-shirt and told them it was Gambiza. They then went for Gambiza," said Hove. They found him and took him away. TOPMorgan Tsvangirai said an MDC supporter was beaten to death by Zanu (PF) supporters on Tuesday. The man had been in a group including local MDC chairman Moses Kufandiko which was accosted by supporters of Zanu (PF) a village shopping centre on Monday. The man was killed after being challenged to produce a membership card of the ruling party and failing to do so, Tsvangirai said another man in the group attacked in Shamva, 50 miles northeast of the capital, was in hospital with an axe wound in the head after the attack.
