||
Contents « » Cases of Violence in Zimbabwe The details of cases referred to in this report have been extracted from press and other sources. This is not a comprehensive compilation. It is a selection of the cases that have been reported by the press and by various other agencies. Many cases of violence have gone unreported because the victims were too frightened to tell reporters or the police what happened to them. Where there have been competing versions of exactly what transpired in particular cases, the various versions of the facts have been given and an attempt has been made to reach a conclusion as to which version of the facts is likely to be the more accurate. In documenting violent episodes caution must obviously be exercised when relying on information provided by political parties as the political parties may exaggerate incidents involving their own members. In some instances, political parties or the media have wrongly reported that deaths had occurred. One newspaper wrongly reported that a death occurred as a result of a political clash, when in actual fact the person died in a motor accident. It should also be noted that the state-controlled press has ignored many of cases of violence allegedly perpetrated upon MDC members, whereas it has prominently reported cases of violence allegedly perpetrated by MDC members. Reliance has had to be placed on the non-government controlled media and the external media for press reports on violent attacks upon MDC members. TOP |
