War vets give some farmers ultimatums
The Herald
14 July, 2000

War veterans have given some commercial farmers countrywide up to one week to leave their farms or face massive disruption of farming operations.

A Norton farmer on Wednesday fled from his property and his security guards were assaulted by a group of war veterans.

The ultimatums come just days before the launch of the Government-sponsored resettlement programme.

Although the Government on Wednesday assured the war veterans and villagers that it would resume an accelerated land redistribution and resettlement programme today, the former freedom fighters have warned of mayhem unless white farm owners vacate their properties.

The president of CFU, Mr Tim Henwood, in an interview yesterday, however, said about 50 farmers had been served with orders to vacate the farms. He said the situation was "too dangerous" as the war veterans had threatened to attack farmers who refused to comply with the orders to leave the farms. "They have threatened to kill all farmers who do not get off the land within their specified period. Although I know of 50 affected farmers now, the situation is spreading throughout the country. He said he had been assured by the police that they would deal with the situation. "We now await to see the action to be taken by the police to stop the marauding war veterans causing problems on the farms."  TOP
