More than 50 opposition supporters in the Mashonaland East province have fled from political violence perpetrated by war veterans and Zanu (PF) supporters, who have declared the province a one-party province.

Goromonzi is the worst hit district, with more than 30 victims who have sought the assistance of Zimrights. Among those that have fled from the district are Elizabeth Nyandoro, her husband and their seven children, Stella Chari, her husband and six children, Trymore Nyandoro, her husband and two children, Constance Munetsi, her husband and two children, and Eda Matyambizi, her husband and two children. George Kawaza is among seven people who fled from political violence in Mudzi district. He said: "I attempted to go to my home in Suswe area in Mudzi last week on Friday but I had to quickly rush back after being told that Zanu (PF) youths and war veterans were looking for me. They hold their meetings every week and the Zanu (PF) youths mark a register of attendance and anyone who does not attend is dealt with.

In Murehwa, Rudo Tenenga fled from the district and does not see herself going back soon. Tenenga, a widow, fled the district after being beaten up by Zanu (PF) youths in May and soon after the elections she sent one of her sons, Moslen, home to check, but he was beaten allegedly by Zanu (PF) youths. He lost four teeth as a result of the assault.

Munyaradzi Bidi, the Zimrights director said this new turn of events was quite saddening as all Zimbabweans were supposed to be concentrating on the healing process and work towards the betterment of the country. A total of three people from Uzumba-Maramba-Pfungwe have sought the assistance of Zimrights and they are accusing the Zanu (PF) supporters of carrying out a "cleansing" operation in which all opposition supporters are to be flushed from the district.

Political violence in Mashonaland East province was widespread before the election particularly in Mudzi, Uzumba-Maranba-Pfungwe, Murehwa and Mutoko. Zanu (PF) only lost one seat in the province, Seke constituency to the MDC.

Wayne Bvudzijena, the police spokesman said the victims had not reported to the police. "The last reports we received were lodged with the police a week after the elections. No reports of political violence have reached us since them," he said.
