The late Maguwu, who was the election agent for Edwin Mushoriwa, who beat Zanu (PF)s Omega Hungwe in the violence-ridden June parliamentary election, was allegedly abducted by Zanu (PF) supporters on Sunday last week. (24 July) His badly mutilated body was found about 200 metres from his house in the early morning hours. MDC secretary-general, Professor Welshman Ncube, confirmed that the body of the late Maguwu had been found on Thursday morning. He said 35 MDC supporters have died in both pre and post-election violence, and that no arrests have been made so far. "The government is elected by the people so that it can protect them. This is why people are to go on a stayaway to restore law and order," said Professor Ncube. He said over 1 000 MDC supporters had lost their homes which, he said, were destroyed by Zanu (PF) supporters, whilst thousands of MDC supporters were still nursing injuries caused by political violence. "President Robert Mugabes government behaves as if it owns the people and can abuse them with impunity. This is unacceptable. We want the rule of law to be restored," said Ncube. (Just before the election another MDC polling agent was kidnapped from his house in Bulawayo. This person, Mr Patrick Nabanyama, was working as a polling agent for David Coltart, a candidate from the opposition party MDC, in Bulawayo when he was kidnapped. This person has not been found and it is feared that he is dead. The police have, however, arrested a number of persons in connection with his kidnapping.) TOP |
